astonamous,
I think it truly was an accident and that Cheney probably feels like the biggest ass on the planet.
There are two things I can't stand though.
1. The right-wing apologists that feel this whole thing is blown out of proportion and should just be swept aside like he farted on mike or something. I mean, the VP of the USA shot a man! That's what we call news!!!
2. The way this is being handled. Bush said today that Cheney "pulled the trigger" and "saw his friend fall." I absolutely hate disassociative speach. I wish Cheney had come out Sunday and said "There has been an accident. On a hunting trip I made a mistake that any first-time hunter should know not to do. I turned quickly and fired at what I thought was a bird. I mistakenly shot a friend of mine. Thankfully, it appears he will be as alright as a man can be when getting hit with birdshot. I am cooperating fully in the local authorities investigation into this accident." If he had said that, there would be none of the circus surrounding this. There would be a few jokes, sure... but none of the crap going on. But the one thing I have not heard Cheney do is admit any mistake on his part. What a dick.
Too bad the dems didn't have disassociative speach as a part of their line...Bill Clinton could have said "I took off my trousers one afternoon. I noticed a stain on an intern's dress."
