You know I saw "Cinderella Man" recently where they portray Max as an ass-hole. He was Jethro Bodines Dad and a great boxer and personality. He killed a guy in the ring and was so shook up about it that he lost 4 of his next 6 fights but eventually won the title by beating Max Schmelling who was Hitler's boy. Max's Dad was Jewish and his Mom was Scottish-Irish and Max wore the star of David on his trunks. He was champ for 364 days where he clubbed it up and partied down until James Braddock beat him in a close decision. Jethro said his Dad got a BJ before the fight. His guys trying to get him out of the dressing room and he's going "Wait a second! I'm about ready to come!" All boxers have a mean side but he was one cool dude. He had a hearty at 50 and never saw his boy go on to be one of the best comedy characters in the history of sit-coms....

You're right about Maxie Baer, but Schmeling was not tight with Hitler. In fact, Hitler & the Nazi's disgusted him. He later said that when he lost to Louis, Hitler basically removed all the privilages he had been given... and he was glad to get as far away as he could from the sick fuck!

You're right. I mis-spoke when I said Schmelling was Hitler's boy. He was just a boxer doing the best he could with no interest in Hitler's ideas of what was what. You know he paid for Joe's funeral and enbraced him whenever possible. Showed no hard feelings on getting humiliated in the re-match. He was a saint or at least a good decent guy.

i remember Macon County Line........with Baer in it......it was very good but by then i think Hollywood thought Baer had been typecast as Jethro Bodine......also not to put Schmelling down but on the first fight he had with Louis .......there had been liniment probably on the gloves Schmelling had probably from when he was in the corner an some got on the gloves i really dont know an he got it in Louis eyes........thats when he stunned him with a knockdown.....an thus went on to win.....i forgot which mag i read it in.....but in the rematch Schmelling actually just covered up an i think he knew Louis was going to beat him.....but i know Scmelling had a very nice carear......and a good record to boot....i dont know much bout the Hitler thing but i knew he was good freinds with Louis and he moved to the uS too later

He was nothing like he was depicted in that film,And Howard refused to speak to him on the matter, the fighter who died affected him deeply(Frankie Campbell), He later paid for his(Campbell's) kids to attend college.
And as for Schmelling, in the re-match Joe Louis fractured a couple of his vertebre with a body punch, before the knock out blow, which caused Schmelling to loose the strength/control in his legs, If you notice from the film record of the fight, He gets knocked down , and when he tries to get up ,his legs are limp beneath him , as he sits on the canvas getting counted out. Man could Joe Louis punch !!!

well ya learn somethin new every time you talk about it.....i do know that Louis had a knockout punch in either hand .....a knockout six inch punch.....an Schmelling said that you had to beat him early cause you dont want Louis to punch you in the face fifteen times a round....cause even if they dont knock you out it still hurts...

No no...Lewis was considered to have the best left hook ever in boxing. I think it was Joe Frazier but Frazier couldn't take a punch like Louis. Remember Louis held the title for I think it was 10-12 years and that was fighting a lot. Schelling did join the army in Nazi germany so he wasn't disgusted with Hitler until after the war. It was just weird times and both sides got brainwashed into thinking they had to fight. Remind anybody of what's going on today? Maxie was a cool dude to get back on point. i will say that Smokin Joe Frazier dint get his name from nowhere......but if you look at his punches.....Ali said that when he was knocked down Frazier threw a punch that started in Africa then caught speed in Alabama an Georgia...okay so you look at the punches an see that Frazier started his from the behind his back line......an then blam......but like i said Louis not Lewis.....could knock you out with either hand from six inches away....i like Frazier but Louis was definitely the better puncher i think...i think Louis held the title for twelve years an two months something like that.....but Ali would have broken that if the Government had not taken his title away from him because if he had been boxing those three an half years then he would have never lost to Joe Frazier....not to take anything away from Joe .....but that is the point....if Ali had not been dormant in boxing for three an half years then he would have been champion for the longest....he was the only heavyweight that could dance for fifteen rounds......if he had to...but he never had to.....I remember when he fought Foster the lightheavyweight champion then an Foster was lightning in a bottle an a knockout punch ....Foster beat everybody in the lightheavyweight division...but when he faced the greatest he went down...Ali was as just as fast or faster than Foster .....that was a good fight ....

This thread has been very educational. I always like Max jr. and I'm pleased to learn he had a great father. Louis was a great boxer. But if they're in the game long enough, everyone gets beat. Look at Tyson. BTW, didn't Marciano take Louis out?
