'THATS WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT' on TV LAND
Pretty good surprised it is on TV Land...they started with talking about "the Richard Pryor Show" pretty good and Paul Mooney is on here .Check it out it's on now!! (Wednesday 10-11 eastern)
I went to Zimbabwe. I know how white people feel in America now; relaxed! Cause when I heard the police car I knew they weren't coming after me!

bingolong,
dang, talk about dejavu. I had just https://richardpryor.com/forums/msgs.cf ... 9&forum=15 - posted the same thing at almost exactly the same time'.
I can't wait to see next week's show. I kind of thought Diahann Carroll felt uncomfortable w/some comments made. but was a good positive contribution.
but I loved when Harry Belafonte asked (what is that guy's name, I know he's a magazine commentator) well that other guest sitting next to Mooney how he felt about gangsta rappers being as bufoonery as Steppin Fetchit or Hattie McDaniel had to be. the guest was saying how he wasn't as proud of the Fetchits, McDaniels, Rochesters. but Belafonte said many of today's rappers are selling an image of ignorance to make money from those who think it's cute and entertaining only, basically cooning as well.
but sadly selling the same image to young blacks who don't know no better.
next week should be pretty wild w/Wanda Sykes and Spike Lee. didn't know until end the show's produced by Tonya Lee, Spike's wife.

tamra,
Wow I saw the name but didn't realize it was his wife...
Yeah we posted at the same time and I was looking around to see if anybody had posted anything yet
I tried to stay up and watch it again but I went to bed early for me (midnight)
The Guys name is Toure...I liked to see the different genertions and responses Wayne and Toure are 30 somethings and The rest were in the 60-70 and damn near 80 range. This was a good diverse panel and I think one that will be hard to top due to that age range. I was feeling like The older guests would feel uncomfortable but they were right there in it and making strong points that really made me rethink a few things.
My take:The differnece between now and then is that buffoonary was really the only mainstream option, there should be know need for it in this day and age....or does it it mean those were accurate depictions of us to begin with... or is it that it just sells...my answer is both!!

bingolong,
unfortunately, nonsense is what sells. you know that word "America" you hear when describing "America loves Julia Roberts", well, it isn't describing blacks. mainstream America is most comfortable w/knowing black entertainment represents a lesser, substandard culture.
the same serious dramas (like Closer w/really bad acting) become Oscar buzzes. similar movies like "G", "The Brothers" become a non-existent thought and is not supported by "mainstream" America
sadly any serious entertainment is rarely taken seriously. perfect example is Frank's Place (Tim Reid) or Linc's Place (Showtime). even though comedies, they were intelligent comedies.
unless it's some "what-chu-talkin-bout" nonsense it doesn't do well.
unfortunately, same attitude exists in the streets. a black person who speaks well and doesn't just clown around to hip hop is frowned upon or ignored by the urban community, or considered a sell-out for being educated and taking a mainstream job. WTF??
perfect examples: Ed Bradley of 60 Minutes or Dennis Richmond head news anchor of KTVU in Oakland, Calif. coming right up behind them is Al Roker (who's branching out into documentaries about serious problems). here are strong brothers who have seen it all and represent so much positivity in entertainment. but people in the hood are like "who?". that's ridiculously sad.

bingolong,
damn, murphy's law I get an email and look at it right away and it's junk, when I don't it's something I need to see.
I set a reminder to watch this last week and missed the first 10 minutes, and now I keep missing it. I hope I catch it again today or something before next week's show.
but wait on the floor laughing at Paul Mooney with "makes me wanna start hanging black people to find out who's black".

Re: 'THATS WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT' on TV LAND
bingolong,
WOW! Diahann Carroll just made a powerful point, actually both her and Harry Belafonte. about the word nigger.
Belafonte and Carroll are from the segregation era, Toure is NOT. so Carroll cannot ever see herself using the word nigger or any racist term for any reason and Belafonte wants to know the empowerment of using the word even around whites since it's considered an acceptable term of endearment.
that alone shows a significant thought process in today's generation and yesterday's. now...how to bridge that gap so that there's understanding instead of offense all around.
I have to agree w/embracing it and making it our own so that it's meaning means nothing, doesn't cut like it did w/yesterday's generation. or maybe just not use the word around ancestors.
(ok, no radios and TVs for them!
)

Re: 'THATS WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT' on TV LAND
bingolong,
ok I finally caught it. definitely worth watching. but funny as hell for NBA's Greg Anthony to claim Kobe Bryant was a hero and everyone else looked at him like "define hero",
and compared to folks like Jack Johnson, Joe Louis, Jackie Robinson and Muhammad Ali. Wanda Sykes said "what has Kobe done off the court to become a hero?"
at the same time I was thinking it.
because others overcame adversity WHILE becoming the greatest (racism (Jack Johnson, Joe Louis, Jackie Robinson), freedom of religion (Ali), sexism & racism (Althea Gibson)). Kobe created his OWN adversity.
and
OMG Wanda Sykes talking about Sharpton right in front of him in regards to media mentioning Sharpton for a response to an issue and thinking "oh please don't say nothing crazy". Sharpton just sat there expressionless.
