Difference between someone clever and a smartass...

someone clever makes you laugh at them making fun of you, while a smartass makes you want to beat the shit out of them... I.E-Steve Harvey=Clever... D.L Highley=smartass... I DID NOT think that was classy of him at all at Kings of Comedy bvfor a show like that, maybe a club, but not a venue as big as that, he kind of lost my respect...
So, when do you think a comedian goes too far in terms of poking fun of members of the audience? In my opinion when it moves from teasing to insulting, except when in response to heckling in which you should roast the fuck out of the asshole...

Noib,
I liked DL Hughleys messing with the audience part on the Kings of Comedy. I actually think that DL is usually funnier screwing with the audience than he is as a normal standup. I remember when he hosted BET Comic View in the early 90's the funniest part would be him at the beginning of the show talking about some of the ridiculous outfits and hair do's.

JTF, I'm afraid there are times when I fall under the smartass realm as well. Once I made a table full of girls walk out after riffing on them, they had been rude to every comic the whole night. I did the same thing a few weeks ago to people that were being rude at a open mic..I'm not sure if that's taking it too far when you go that far, I know I wouldn't do it in a A club

Murphdogg,
I've always said: [/i]It's better to be a smartass, than a dumbass.[/i]
(No offense to any dumbasses out there...)

Murphdogg,
Women hecklers are a touchy subject because if you go to far the crowd will turn on you sometimes. Sometimes you got to spank the crowds ass.

DL is kind of known for that... if he was reaching to get a reaction I wouldn't respect it. But like was said earlier, he did it on BET, so you know if you sit close to the stage at a DL show you might get it.
I saw him tell some of those same insults two years earlier in Chicago, that upset me... STOCK!!
But DL is really smart and has a twist to 'hood comedy', I respect him a lot..

Murphdogg,
hecklers, no matter the sex, sexual preference, or vulnerability should get it twice as bad as they gave it... I once dared a man in a wheelchair that was raggin' on me to walk up and say it in my face... All he could do was laugh...

luckily both times the crowd was with me, I'm worried about pissing off a club owner or a booker, I was taught to ignore the first few heckler lines..that way when I do tear into them the crowd is with me

Murphdogg,
I agree with you. I've learned the same thing. But if a crowd isn't feeling me, I jump on the first person and let the room fill with tension. Hell, they didn't like me, so what if I hurt a feeling. Luckily, that's only happened to me once in the last year. Can't make a career doing that shit.
