An Old Enemy

This letter was written to us and we found it alarming and asked the author if we could post to see if we might be able to obtain any information for her. I have also suggested she watch herself.
I also did remind her, that while Malcom was right on about a lot, I took exception to her sentence about white people. There were many white people who died in the civil rights movement, while fighting alongside their brothers and sisters. I also reminded her of my great uncle, Oliver Brown(married to my great aunt Elizabeth Brewster), who died with his father, John Brown and other brothers in the raid at Harper's Ferry. Brown was one of this country's first and fiercest abolishionist-he was white.

Hey Richard and Jennifer,
As I wrote to ya'll before I am the professional grad student with hardly time to fuck. What have been researching has spun into something much bigger than I had thought. I am in Augusta, GA. We have paper here, a paper, one. The name of it is the Augusta Chronicle. I have been researching a riot that happened here in May of 1970. A little background--the man that owns this paper is the second wealthiest man in GA. Next to Uncle Ted Turner. His name is Billy Morris--no relation to the agency. What really happened was that this riot occurred because a Black man, not man a juvenile, he was 16, and learning disabled was tortured and killed by jailers in our Augusta jail. This newspaper reported he was killed by inmates. Lies. The paper only reported 3 dead. 6 died that I have heard from some activists that I know here in my town. I am able to enter our practically all white country club and I started asking, looking pretty and acting as if I were stupid about the riot. Laughter arose and I heard, "how many niggers were put in the trunks of police cars and taken to Phinizy swamp?". I almost shit. I think I have something here. I was able to speak to a former Panther, (and he's running with Farrakhan now who I am not a fanof) who came down to try to organize the riot into an organized protest. American flags were burned and the National Guard had to show up to stop it. James Brown lives here in Augusta and tried to help stop it. I don't know whose side he was on. It was successful and detrimental. This paper reported lies in favor of our city government. This newspaper has continuously lied in favor of a racist city. There are so many lies that I couldn't type them all that were printed. We are not still fighting in the streets but Billy wants us to think we could at any moment even today. He separates us to keep control. Given the information that I have found by searching our paper's archives and personal interviews, I know there's a bunch of bullshit controlling public opinion here. I want to turn it out and make my thesis out of it. He's a fucking billionaire but he, in my current observation, is a racist subversive devil that needs to be exposed. I plan to take him on myself. I need some advise and let me know if ya'll can tell me a direction to take. Its an enormous campaign that I am planning, but I hope to change the state and country through these efforts. I asked my Panther acquaintance, "Were there any white people downtown rioting?". He said, "No Kelly, Its like Malcolm X said, 'they might sang with ya, but they ain't gonna swang with ya.'" But as all things change, I'm about to start swinging. Little with girl with a little cash behind me compared to billions I'm broke, but I have to change this shit and will die trying. Even if I fail, the bustard will be dead in ten years and I will be the girl who took on a multinational racist organization without fear. US senate here I come. Do ya'll know of something that is similar? Give me some advice, some words, something. I know ya'll know what I should do. Come with some genius for me.
Kisses,

Smokey H,
This is scary shit-but real and I would like to help her; I suggested she try to reach Jesse Jackson and even Al Sharpton, who despite his early days, has gained some wisdom and credibility in his later ones.

artforartsake,

GREAT post, Susan!

I'm a card-carrying member of Rainbow/PUSH. I believe
you can contact Rev. Jackson there:

Jennifer,
The media is a strange bird and it will someday eat it self alive.
Those are good choices, Jackson and Sharpton, but I think that grad student should try and contact an Investigator reporter from another newspaper, the New York Times perhaps or another rival newspaper from Augusta.
Just a thought.

PS It was the media that cost Gore Florida in the last election.

I have to ask what problems are going on in Augusta today?
As much as I want justice served for every person we lost in the struggle. I feel if this much time is going to be vested in an issue, use that energy to improve the chances for kids in Augusta today. Is there someone currently locked-up in Augusta being held on "questionable" reasons; someone that can't afford an attorney that doesn't know how to contact Jesse, Sharpton, or the NAACP for help?
I just think if you can get this many people together, use the opportunities to receive justice for someone NOW, effect someones life today. Continue to question the deaths in 1970, write a book, contact the Council for the Arts ask for funding for a documentary on this incident. But use this to change living conditions right now.
This is a continuation of the "slave mentality". Slaves suffered knowing that they would be rewarded in death, our heaven could always wait.
I want justice in the case of Emmitt Till, I'm happy the Fed's have officially opened an "all out" investigation in the Till case and have promised that justice will be served. But the parties that matter in that case, the judgements won't effect them. The majority of the men that beat and murdered Till are dead. The one or two that are still alive are so close to death, a verdict will probably be of no consequence to them. The person this investigation mattered to the most, Emmitt Till's mother passed away over a year ago. Never seeing justice.
I'm rambling, sorry. There is nothing wrong with investigating and getting the correct information out there. But DON'T waste this opportunity, in honor of Billy Morris make changes that can save and change lives today. You want to get justice for Billy... first thing, begin to create an environment where no person/family/community has to wait 34 years for justice. Give Billy Morris a legacy. Second, put the truth out there about this crime, you don't need Jesse or Al for that. One thing about the truth, it's like a snowball at the top of a mountain if you put it together and let it roll, eventually it become so big it'll crush anything in it's way, especially the people that covered it up.
And let me be honest because I have to be... there is a part of me that get's really pissed when people get shocked and stunned about these types of things. Do you have any idea how many of this cases are out there? You don't have to research the archives of a newspaper, go find any Black person that was alive in Augusta during the 30's, 40's, 50's... they'll tell you shit that will not make you ashamed to be white, but ashamed to be human. FUCK JESSE, FUCK AL... they always step in after all the work is done anyway.
I'll put my ass where my mouth is too... I'll be in Georgia in two weeks, if you need help, let me know!!!
Don't talk about it, be about it.

robfharris,
The case of EMmitt Till is reopened and was front page NYTimes-a few weeks ago when that happened-damn, fuck, it took long enough.
I hear what you are saying about focus on today but simultaneous to that-injustices have to be righted-horrible wrongs cannot be swept under the rug. Just like the case of Emmitt Till....
I love your passion and your offer to go to Augusta, maybe we should take a trip?!

Jennifer,
Don't get me wrong, I want everything from the past made right. I believe Billy Morris' spirit can't rest until the truth is known. But one of many issues I have with this country, is that they will apologize about some shit 50 years ago. But never when it matters.
It should be a law every time the government acknowledges the mistakes of the past, they have to open an independent investigation of a current case.

robfharris,

Oh yeah... tell your girl, I'm serious about coming to Augusta, I will be in Georgia in two weeks. I'm a willing foot soldier. Narrow minded southerners hate two things: "Outsiders" and "uppity-niggers". Oh lookie-here, I'm both.
