my fave british standup personally is billy connelly. he is wonderful. now THAT is an act to hear if you can get through the accent. =D

my dad used to play hima bunch for me in younger years.

I can tell you that Ali G is an Cambridge graduate and just soooo inteligent. He used to barrack the top profs in the world in the lecture classes while studying at Cambridge and effectively just rip them to pieces - however he did it in such a way that they didnt know that they were been made fools of!! hes one clever guy. he got a break through a friend that made a pilot - the right person saw it - liked it and the rest is history. Hes now a very wealthy man. . .

That's cool info. Makes sense too.Yeah, Ali G is really one of the more clever characters that's come out in the last little while--his interviews with dignitaries are priceless, and the other characters hedoes are genius too. He is some funny shit.

I want to check out Billy Connoly but I haven't yet. I know this sounds like an ignorant question, but can somebody describe his material and style to me? I mostly associate him with head of the class, and this one time when I was walking down the street and he was being videotaped and followed by a family who seemed to be fans. Does this occur to celebs often?

His early stuff is very raw (as you'd expect) and is highly autobiographical (again as you'd expect). He mainly used to tell straight forward storys, many of which were about his rough Glaswegian upbringing, rather getting involved with more taxing topics or social commentary.

He had some 'comical' songs as well that were quite famous here (using the word fuck in the 70's seems to have guaranteed cult status over here).

I too remember him from my childhood - my mother used to play him all the time - but unlike many great comics I personally find that his old material has not aged well.

Obviously a great bloke though.

I also wanted to mention that I finally got to see a little of Izzard's HBo special last night-VERY funny guy but I don't think the clothes he chose complimented him well-they made his head look like it was too big for his body

SweetLuchia, I'mpretty sure bloke just means 'dude' or 'fella'. But I don't actually know anything about the intricacies of the English's version of the English language.

Ha, ha, ha, that's reeeeeeally funny what you say about Izzard and his big heeeeed. You may or may not know that he is a self confessed cross dresser and often takes to the stage in female garb. He's not really my cup of tea - too cutesy and surreal but he seems to go over really well with women because of his style and his dress sense!!!

Regarding 'bloke', it's a very English term for a man - like chap, fella and geezer.

I'm gonna dig out my Mary Poppins video in a minute and start doing Dick van Dyke impressions!!!
