I'm not a comic, but love seeing live stand-up. I occasionally see ads pop up in the LA Weekly and City Beat... I say check the weeklies, and call some of those places. Be an animal about it... call the clubs, coffee shops, etc.
The Comedy Store on Sunset has an open mic standup night, for sure - I've gone to watch a friend there. And better a place for inspiration, than a stage that The Man himself had played countless times? Call Largo on Fairfax, too. I'm not sure what their deal is on up and comers, but I know it's a hotbed of comics on some nights. An acquaintance of mine owns a lounge called The Parlour, (near Fairfax, on Santa Monica) which sometimes has comedy nights.
I'm in L.A. too, so if you're going on a night that I happen to be free, I'd love to come out and watch, give you some immoral support.

Good luck, in the meantime, and Happy Birthday.
