RICHARD & THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL

..I recently watched the RIchard Pryor Show boxset and I have to say it was quite an experience. I was just a wee tot when those originally aired, so it was nice to check 'em out to get my laugh/think on.

But I got a question...in the 'Roast' segment, everyone is making comments about Richard getting into trouble at a gig held at The Hollywood Bowl. What exactly happened? Anyone who can fill me in, please do so.

Correct me if I'm wrong, anyone. But I believed at the Hollywood Bowl, he called out the homosexual community for not being there for Blacks during the Civil Rights movement. Adding, he thought it was hypocritical of them to ask for Black entertainers to assist them for their causes, at that time. There is a famous picture that comes from that night and seeing how this is only my second post and I'm probably completely wrong, I'll shut up now and maybe someone will tell you about that picture, or maybe even post it with the correct info.

Nope-you are right-except then he turned around, bent in a postition so the audience was able to see his beautiful derriere and told them, "now you can kiss my rich, black ass!"
God love him-it created a firestorm but as usual it woke folks up!

not 2 b offensive...but was he drunk/high at the time?? did he REALLY feel that strong about it?? i ask cuz it seems NOW its been "swept under the rug"....aside from the cd box and roast dvd, i never knew that had happened!!

I think you are asking what percipitated it---a dance group called the Lockers-black dance group RIchard felt were being treated badly while a white ballet group was being handled with kidd gloves-and there were apparently other back stage stuff going on and I wasn't there-but from what I understand-the usual cocaine was part of it.

Thanks for the additional background on what happened at the Hollywood Bowl......(The Lockers had Ozone from the Breakin movies)......that's so f'ed up!!!!!
