Murphdogg,
Whew. That's a hard question. Comedy is comedy. Now the comics who do the material is the make or break for me. I hate comics who project consciencely or unconsciencely an arrogance. These guys obviously are stuck up. Dennis Miller is an example and Dane Cook is another. It slaps you in the face just how cool they think they are and it manifests itself in their reluctance to poke fun at themselves. There's lots more and my knee jerk reaction is to say.."Oh you think you're so cool. What an asshole." and turn the channel. Guys who mug cutely for the camera and expect everyone else to think it's cute also makes me roll my eyes. Howie Mandel is a perfect example of this. To me the best comedy comes from people who have good material and are able to act well enough to enhance it. If you watch Pryor his acting ability is a magical part of the act and raises the impact of the material several notches. He's almost alone in this though. The others I like bend their jokes and routines in intelligent ways so that you're saying a) There' a smart person and b) There's a likeable person. Bottom line comics who help you feel less alone with your faults, opinions and insecurities are my favourites.

Murphdogg,
Thank you sir, I like it when comics do that, sometimes it's well thought out and makes the audience think too.

Appaloosa,
I like it when a comic isn't afraid to lose their audience and go off into a different subject matter because they are confident enough to win them back again. It takes a brave person to pull that off, because most comics are addicted to the continuous sound of an audience's laughter and feel more comfortable telling jokes all nite.
That's why I'll always admire TMIC because he stepped out of the "Safe zone" and took his audience to different places, (you can actually hear the laughter stop), but then like a pilot he brought you safely back to ground.
Peace gee
