A federal grand jury in Richmond, Va. has indicted Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick on one count of conspiricy to transport dogs over state lines for dogfighting, according to reports.

More to come on this breaking news story.

Earlier this month, investigators said almost nothing to reporters who gathered at the property while agents conducted a second search, but documents filed in Richmond and obtained by The Associated Press detailed aspects of the case for the first time. Vick is not named in the documents.

The property was used as the "main staging area for housing and training the pit bulls involved" in a dogfighting operation, according to the court papers.

The documents contend prize money from the dogfighting climbed into the thousands of dollars, people came from as far away as Texas and sheepish pit bulls were killed.

As federal agents used a backhoe to dig in an area about 10 feet wide by 20 feet long behind the massive two-story home, then left at about 4:30 p.m., the documents shed some light on their investigation.

They allege that dogfights have been sponsored by "Bad Newz Kennels" at the property since at least 2002. For the events, participants and dogs traveled from South Carolina, North Carolina, Maryland, New York, Texas and other states.

Fifty-four pit bulls were recovered from the property during searches in April, along with a "rape stand," used to hold dogs in place for mating; an electric treadmill modified for dogs; and a bloodied piece of carpeting, the documents said.

The documents said the fights usually occurred late at night or in the early morning and would last several hours.

Before fights, the participating dogs of the same sex would be weighed and bathed, according to the filings. Opposing dogs would be washed to remove any poison or narcotic placed on the dog's coat that could affect the other dog's performance.

Sometimes, dogs weren't fed to "make it more hungry for the other dog."

Fights would end when one dog died or with the surrender of the losing dog, which was sometimes put to death by drowning, strangulation, hanging, gun shot, electrocution or some other method, according to the documents. The property has an aboveground swimming pool, and investigators were seen looking into its murky water Friday.

During a June search of the property, investigators uncovered the graves of seven pit bulls that were killed by members of "Bad Newz Kennels" following sessions to test whether the dogs would be good fighters, the documents alleged.

Members of "Bad Newz Kennels" also sponsored and exhibited fights in other parts of Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Maryland, New Jersey and other states, according to the filings.

On Vick's Web site, he lists his birthplace as Newport News, "a.k.a. BadNews."

Friday, federal agents used shovels and heavy equipment to search the Vick property, where an informant told authorities as many as 30 dogs could be buried.

A backhoe-front loader was brought in and used to excavate a cleared area on the property. The material found to be of interest was transferred into numerous large, ice-filled coolers and loaded into a rental truck, which left the property.

An Associated Press reporter and photographer viewing the investigation from a helicopter could not clearly identify the evidence being collected.

Investigators were digging in an area about 50 yards behind a large white house. About 15 people could be seen on the property, which includes several kennels surrounded by pens made of metal fencing, other kennels and outbuildings.

Located in southeast Virginia, the expansive property has a metal gate at the entrance and a white plastic fence around the perimeter. The fence and a large two-story building painted black behind the home obscured the work of investigators.

More than 15 vehicles were on the property, including the rental truck and at least one Virginia State Police evidence collection truck.

Corinne Geller, a spokeswoman for the Virginia State Police, said state authorities were working with federal investigators in an "assistance capacity."

Vick has said he rarely visited the property. No charges have been filed.

During an April 25 raid at the property, about half the dogs were tethered to car axles with heavy chains that allowed them to get close to each other, but not to have contact, an arrangement typical for fighting dogs, according to an affidavit.

Later, Surry County officials secured a search warrant based on an informant's information about dogs being buried on the property, but never acted on it because prosecutor Gerald G. Poindexter said he had concerns with the wording of the document.

On June 7, the day that warrant expired, federal officials executed their own with the help of state police investigators.

Poindexter publicly questioned the federal government's interest in a dogfighting case. He suggested Vick's celebrity was the draw and raised race as a possible motivation. Poindexter and Vick are black, as is Surry County Sheriff Harold Brown.

Poindexter, on vacation in Louisiana, said by telephone he was unaware of Friday's search and was still pursuing what he called a parallel investigation. He said he assumed Surry County and federal officials eventually will share their evidence.

Vick initially said he had no idea the property might have been used in a criminal enterprise and blamed family members for taking advantage of his generosity. He also put the house up for sale and reportedly sold it quickly, although there is no record that the sale has closed. Vick has since declined to talk about the investigation.

and it's not like this jackass doesn't have enough money to find other ways to entertain himself. but again, if he's innocent, he'd better prove it quick before Don Diva Missy Kitti puts out a hit on him. @.@

Jennifer,

Virginia Voters for Animal Welfare

For the highest readability, start your letter with a short sentence.

Alert 7/18/07 Michael Vick Indicted on Dogfighting Charges

By now you have seen numerous reports about the indictment of Michael Vick and several others on dogfighting charges.

No doubt there will be more descriptive detail about the killing of the dogs that didn't make the grade as fighters, but there has been little said about what happened to the dogs that were "successful" fighters, far more grim and endless for those dogs that had no option but to fight.

Keep in mind this is a business. People who fight dogs gamble and win. Only the dogs lose, and only the children who grow up thinking this is OK lose.

Remember the words of Sen. Watkins during the last session of Virginia's General Assembly who thought it "country" and so funny to instigate a cock fight as a youthful lark. This is the opposition. This is the mind set.

Now is the time to add more pressure to the situation - pressure to produce change.

And when you are making it uncomfortable for those involved and those who should be prosecuting, remember this is a deadly business that goes beyond dogs and goes beyond Surry County.

Remember that we are Virginia Voters for Animal Welfare and our goal is to make change for Virginia's companion animals legislatively, either by passing new laws or by enforcing existing laws.

Here is what you can do. As you get responses to your efforts, we surely would appreciate it if you let us know about them.

1. VACA (Virginia Animal Control Association).
Contact info:
Kevin Kilgore, President, VACAemail: KMKilgore@co.hanover.va.us

Kathy Strouse, VP, VACA
email: KStrouse@police.city.chesapeake.va.us

Thank VACA for their work.

Kathy Strouse has been on top of the Surry case since it broke.

VACA has been important in the Michael Vick/Surry County case, and earlier this year were incredibly helpful in the successful prosecution of Mr. Stacey Miller, convicted of dogfighting in Richmond.

2. Governor Timothy Kaine
Contact info:TKaine@governor.virginia.gov

Remind Gov. Kaine that VVAW sent him (6/9/07) a letter signed by nearly 400 people asking for his action opposing blood sport, and he did not have the simple courtesy to even acknowledge the letter.

3. Roger Goodell, NFL Commissioner
Contact info: GoodellR@nfl.com

This man can affect Michael Vick's work. Let him know what you'd like him to do re Vick's football career and how the Commissioner should respond to these criminal indictments.

4.Robert F. McDonnell, Attorney General, State of Virginia
Contact info: McDonnell@oag.state.va.us

We have not heard any public statement from Mr. McDonnell about the Surry County dogfighting case, although we hear frequently enough that he is angry that the state of New York sends people to Virginia to buy guns and demonstrate how Virginia gun buying procedures are totally ineffective.

Despite the invitation offered to Mr. McDonnell to become the Elliott Spitzer for Virginia (you'll recall that Spitzer is now Governor of New York), we have heard nothing nor read anything from Mr. McDonnell on the dogfighting issue.

Ask him what he is doing about blood sport in Virginia.

5.Gerald Poindexter, Surry County Commonwealth Attorney and Harold D. Brown, Surry County Sheriff
Contact info:
Commonwealth Attorney Poindexter: GPoindexter@courts.state.va.us

Sheriff Brown: SurrySheriff@ruralam.net

To date, there appears to be nothing from Surry County officials except ineptitude and indifference. A failure to properly draw or execute a search warrant and a blind eye is what the good folks of Surry County got from their local boys.

Why?

Is either running for election? Should they be elected?

6. Tom Page/Bobbi Page, Publishers
Sussex-Surry Dispatch Newspaper
Contact info: dmmonitor@earthlink.net
ofc: 757-899-3551
fax: 757-899-7312

Write a letter to the editor of the Sussex-Surry Dispatch, letting readers know what you want to happen in Surry County and what your concerns are about dogfighting there or in any part of Virginia.

7. Write to the newspaper in your own area.

Contact info: call the paper and ask for the email address for "Letters to the Editor".

There are blood sports throughout Virginia. Ask what is being done to combat this in your area, and if nothing is being done - if there are no dog- or cockfighting cases brought in the last year or so - ask why.

8. Contact your own delegate and senator.

Contact info: to get the name/contact info for your legislators, http://conview.state.va.us/whosmy.nsf/main?openform - Use this link'

Ask their plans for combating blood sport, already illegal in Virginia. Ask them to support an increase in penalties for involvement in blood sport.

Tell them what you want changed.

Tell them VVAW had a bill patroned last year (Senate Bill 1345) by Sen. Benjamin Lambert which was defeated; the bill would have required the reporting by public employees of animals suspected of being dogfighting participants.

Seek their commitment to support this at a minimum in the upcoming session, and offer your vote (and hopefully a group of votes you can deliver) if they commit to helping.

9.Contact the public pound for your jurisdiction.

Contact info: call the public pound or the Sheriff, or look for your county information on line.

Ask the pound and the ACOs (Animal Control Officers) to photograph and identify all animals entering the pound with particular emphasis on those showing signs of being involved in fighting.

10. Mark G. Parker, President, NIKE
Contact info:
email: declined
ofc: 503-671-6453
fax: 503-671-6300 (not confirmed)
US mail: #1 Bowerman Drive; Beaverton, OR 97005-6453

Let the Nike people know you consider them spineless for having kept Michael Vick as their spokesman - their shoe salesman. Let them know what you think about that and which of their products you intend to buy.

Make it uncomfortable for those who are not helping while at the same time being polite.

Right now is the time to make your thoughts known to those who can help us make a difference.

Jennifer,

and I loved his jackass response about not knowing what was going on. yeah right! that dog fight camp was well set up and very elaborate for him to not know.

and unfortunately, video footage of the dog fights have been shown on the news repeatedly. I can't even watch Animal Planet or Discovery Channel programs showing what animals do naturally in the wild without kleenex handy. if I so much as see a sick african elephant or injured lion, I'm bawling. so this Vick shit here is beyond unbearable. it's stupid and ignorant, unnecessary and beyond cruel.

and right now Vick is probably only concerned about his endorsements. @.@ what a bitch. ]:o( maybe Vick can work for KFC and help put them out of business real quick!

Jennifer,

I suspect his endorsements are now dropping like flies. hehe ]:o) this is pretty bad, and sad, but avoidable, so no sympathy for any involved. even if Vick-Prick wasn't home, with that type of camp set up on his property, he should have known and been more responsible. the dog fight camp was bigger than the square footage of 3+ single family homes. 8-o

I do hope the law is passed that makes those who watch the fights punishable as well. and all $$ collected during raids should automatically go to animal shelters across the country.

I just don't have a tolerance for this type of stuff. :X

well I guess Poor-ville wasn't that bad for Vick. he wants to go back to it. @.@ I'd rather hear about him wasting $$ by wiping his butt with it than this. when I think of the $$ that went into building the camp and buying equipment for it, good lawd. 8-o

Nike suspends release of Vick line

New shoe will be delayed because of dogfighting case

Posted: Thursday July 19, 2007 3:33PM; Updated: Thursday July 19, 2007 6:59PM

ATLANTA (AP) -- Michael Vick's legal troubles prompted Nike on Thursday to suspend the release of its latest product line named after the Atlanta Falcons quarterback.

Nike has told retailers it will not release a fifth signature shoe, the Air Zoom Vick V, this summer. Nike spokesman Dean Stoyer said the four shoe products and three shirts that currently bear Vick's name will remain in stores.

Vick will be arraigned next week in a Richmond, Va., federal courtroom on charges of sponsoring a gruesome dogfighting operation.

Meanwhile, Falcons owner Arthur Blank issued a statement Thursday, saying the organization is "working diligently on exploring our options."

"This is an emotionally charged and complicated matter," Blank said. "There are a wide range of interests and legal issues that need to be carefully considered as we move ahead, including our need to respect the due process that Michael is entitled to. Also, this situation affects everyone -- our club, our players and associates, our sponsors, our fans and the Atlanta community among them -- so we must consider all of our customers in making any decisions.

"Given the differing perspectives and strong feelings around this issue, we probably won't make everyone happy, but we are committed to doing the right thing. As the owner of this club that's, ultimately, my responsibility."

Blank added that he was "saddened and distressed about this -- not for myself, for our fans and community who have been so loyal to us."

ESPN reported that Vick had called Blank on Wednesday. The network said its sources believed Vick to have been contrite, and he apologized for the distractions the case has created, and thanked Blank for his support.

Stoyer said Nike still has a standing contract with Vick, but declined to speculate on his future with the company.

A statement released by Nike Inc. said the company "is concerned by the serious and highly disturbing allegations made against Michael Vick, and we consider any cruelty to animals inhumane and abhorrent. We do believe that Michael Vick should be afforded the same due process as any citizen; therefore, we have not terminated our relationship."

Stoyer, who declined to discuss terms of Vick's contract, indicated the company has no commercials or documentaries planned with the three-time NFL Pro Bowl selection.

In previous years, Nike has run footage and interviews with Vick on its Web site, but none of the video promotions are currently posted.

"Some of that was shown on a limited run based on rights and usage," Stoyer said. "There's nothing new planned."

The Humane Society of the United States issued a statement calling upon Nike to pull its Vick clothing and shoes from retailers and from its web site. It also called upon NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to suspend Vick.

Vick signed his current contract with Nike in 2001, the same year Atlanta chose him as the NFL's No. 1 overall draft pick. After leading the Falcons to the 2002 and '04 playoffs, Vick last year became the first quarterback in league history to rush for 1,000 yards in a season.

tamra,
He is back in the NFL and time will tell if he will ever do anynmore stupid shit. It was not right what he did but he lost over 120 million dollars and got sent to prison with a felony conviction over running a dogfighting ring and shooting 66 pit bulls that would not fight. A woman in Selmer, Tennesse shot her preacher husband in the back with a shotgun while he was faced down asleep and she told the people in the nut house her husband said she was a dummy for falling for an email scam and losing 16 thousand dollars. She got 252 days in the nut house and she is now a free woman. Lenard Little killed my friends cousin in a drunk driving car wreck and only got 30 days in the offseason in the county jail.People should not do more jail time for harming animals than they would for harming humans.
