Is there any hope?

When I look with one eye and one ear open to the statistics of dogs and cats that are,let's face it, killed because there's no easy way of dealing with the numbers, I think "What is the thing to do?" Keep positive I guess and do what you can. It ain't hard to get your heart broke these days. What's the smart and humane thing to do?
